Clifford Allen Saxon, a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, peacefully transitioned from our world surrounded by family on Thursday, September 8th, 2022, in Austin, Texas. Despite his hard-fought attempts to overcome them, he ultimately succumbed to complications from a June 2022 surgery. He was 80 years old.
Cliff was a "new year's baby," born January 1st, 1942, in San Antonio, Texas, to Col. Clifford Tyra Saxon and Ethelyn Lila Lawrence Saxon. He grew up traveling and living on military bases worldwide with a father in the United States Army. As a youth, Cliff was active in scouting and proudly achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. After returning to San Antonio in the late 1950s, Cliff attended Thomas Jefferson High School, where he participated in various activities such as football, baseball, and student government. Cliff graduated in 1960 and went on to attend Texas A&M University. While at A&M, he was a proud member of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets (Company E2) and had the distinct honor of being one of Miss Reveille's handlers.
After college, he proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and later the Air Force Reserves. While stationed at Vandenberg AFB, Cliff served on a Missile Combat Crew, also known as a "Missileer," and experienced one of the scariest times in American history. Cliff was unknowingly a part of history that October of 1962, as he was on duty in a missile silo during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
While serving at Bergstrom AFB in Austin, Texas, he was introduced to the love of his life, LaNan Hempel. On October 8th, 1967, they were married and began a journey that would have marked 55 years this October. They raised two children and lived in Houston, Austin and Georgetown, Texas.
After the Air Force, he spent most of his professional career in electronics manufacturing, both on the production side and later in the purchasing/supply chain areas. He retired from full time employment 2009.
Cliff loved to get out on the lake as it was one of a few places where he felt he could relax. It was a place for fun, and, most importantly, family and friends. The Saxons spent many weekends skiing, fishing, or floating in devil's cove. The family also spent time involved in chili cookoffs, bowling leagues, softball, and various school events. An occasional trip to the SPJST Hall was also a time to teach the kids the finer points of “honky tonks” and dancing. There was no doubt that Cliff loved his Aggie Football and the Dallas Cowboys. He was quick to get involved in anything the kids were doing including coaching soccer, showing his support at the kid’s sporting events, band concerts and recitals. He was a cheerful servant when called upon to volunteer. Cliff spent many years as a member of the Georgetown Sertoma Club and later served as an officer at the local, regional, and national levels.
During retirement, Cliff loved being a Papa and spending time with his grandchildren. He looked forward to watching and attending the grandchildren’s baseball, football, or soccer games. He took great interest in all their activities and how they were doing in school.
Cliff was known for his quick wit, his infectious smile, and his very dry sense of humor. He was known for being organized, detailed, and disciplined. He could fix just about anything given the right resources. He always seemed to have the correct answer at the right time. He had a handshake that was both memorable and envied at the same time.
Cliff was preceded in death by his father, Col. Clifford T. Saxon, his mother, Ethelyn L. Waugh, and his stepfather, Roland G. Waugh. He is survived by his wife LaNan, their children and spouses, Brent Saxon and Lucinda Dean Saxon, Monica Saxon Boram and Doug Boram, and his grandchildren, Parker, Bryce, and Blake. He is also survived by his sister, her husband, Linda Saxon Hutchens and Hutch Hutchens, and his nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial donations be made to the Folds of Honor Foundation.
