A California Native, Steve was born in Los Angeles and lived in LA and Davis, before settling in Upland and attending Upland High School, where he was a standout on the varsity tennis team, graduating in 1961. As an undergraduate at UCLA , Steve majored in Economics, receiving his BS in 1965.
While attending college, he lived in Santa Monica and, cultivating his passions for music, sports and driving, explored the Southland, attending shows and games, while familiarizing himself (and his fortunate passengers,) with the intricacies of Los Angeles. Touring with Steve became legendary --a true experience-- and when he relocated to Berkeley in 1968, he expanded his palette and the Bay Area became his canvas; his affection for his surroundings deep, enduring and infectious.
Steve’s lifelong love of programming began at LA County in 1965, and lasted until his death. In 1977 he founded Berkeley Software, Inc., where he provided Computer System Design and Analysis for the City and County of San Francisco, Bank of America, and Kaiser Permanente among others.
In 1988, Steve and his wife, Lee, purchased property on the Klamath River in California. It became a favorite destination and a second home where nature, music and fine company awaited, and the raucous Thanksgivings with his extended family and friends set a perennial standard.
Steve loved to travel, visiting China, Europe and Hawaii with his family. He loved to expound, to laugh, to share and was generous to a fault. He was progressive; a true champion of the oppressed. Steve loved music, attending a truly staggering number of concerts over more than six decades. From Dylan to the Dead, Hendrix to The Who. Toots, Bill Kirchen, Graham Parker Patti Smith and Jefferson Airplane were among his favorites, but Steve left no genre unexplored. Most of all, Steve loved his family and his friends.
Steve is survived and deeply missed by his wife, Maryleen(Lee) Wells; son Alex Golden and his wife Amy Sammartino; son Nick Golden; daughter Gina Golden and her partner Sergio Vasquez;
